Micro-Bio achieves major reductions in emissions

As part of its involvement in the Cleaner Greener Production Programme (CGPP), Micro-Bio Ireland Ltd developed a new processing system, which decomposes sodium chlorate in a reaction with hydrochloric acid at a temperature of approximately 950C. The reactants are converted to sodium chloride, sodium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid. Thesodium chloride solution is then recycled.

The Micro-Bio CGPP project team also set out to reduce atmospheric emissions of chlorine by 75% annually, and atmospheric emissions of hydrochloric acid by 70% annually. They also set out to reduce overall emissions to sewer by 20% annually in addition to achieving annual reductions in waste output to sewers of the order of 70% for TDS; 80% for chloride and 50% for sulphate.

Following the installation of the chlorate decomposition system, the company achieved a 76% reduction in TDS emissions; a 78% reduction in chloride emissions and an 87% reduction in sulphate emissions.
